What can become of an old Hamam, where today a carpet dealer haggles with passersby? What could be done with an old demolished steel bridge, whose remains lie on the banks of the Bosporus? The participants of the IMIAD Workshop were confronted not only with these questions: embedded in the accentuated urban context of a fascinating metropolis of 13 million inhabitants, about 40 IMIAD students from Lahti, Lugano, Stuttgart, Edinburgh and Istanbul searched for solutions for the variety of challenges facing this conurbation. In a stark contrast to the small, straightforward alpine idyll of San Bernardino which formed the framework of the first IMIAD Workshop in 2006, the focus in Istanbul was to develop a feeling for this pulsating city and its distinctive characteristics.
